During the last decades, the discourse on spatial planning and architecture neglected the territories of resource extraction and distribution, focusing on cities and agglomeration growth, leaving infrastructural and agricultural spaces to the social sciences, agricultural economics, and environmental engineering. Yet agricultural production and its global distribution also continued to be an important driver of settlement development. This can be well illustrated by the example of palm oil production in Southeast Asia. Understanding it and reading it from the architects’ perspective can, on the one hand, reveal spatial effects of global value chains, and on the other hand, lead to a productive interweaving of urban environment and agricultural production through architectural projects.
