Welcome to Our Woods: Towards a Communal LandscapeStefan Laxness
“Welcome to Our Woods” is a community project in Treherbert, South Wales, that set out to reclaim the surrounding hills from decades of industrial use. Once shaped by coal mining and later by commercial pine plantations, the landscape had become inaccessible and disconnected from local life. Since 2009, residents have worked together to open paths, restore woodlands, and create spaces for social, cultural, and economic activity. From small volunteer-led clean‑ups to negotiating shared management of 350 hectares of forest, the group has shown how local people can shape their environment for the common good. Their story is one of turning a place of extraction into a place of regeneration—strengthening the case for local communities as active stewards of the landscape and their own future.
